CONTAINER VOLUME AT PORT OF NEW YORK AND NEW JERSEY SPIKES 13.5% IN JUNE

Container volume at the Port of New York and New Jersey grew strongly in June, reaching a record high for the second consecutive month, while import-export and rail freight also recorded positive growth.

The Port of New York and New Jersey experienced a strong month of growth in June, with total volume increasing 13.5%.

 

The port handled 708,935 TEUs (395,219 containers) compared to 624,512 TEUs (346,850 containers) in June 2023. This growth brings the year-to-date total through June to 4,210,611 TEUs (2,336,088 containers).

 

June marked the fourth consecutive month the port surpassed the 700,000 TEU mark and the seventh consecutive month of year-over-year growth. The port also maintained its position as the second-largest port in the United States in terms of cargo handled in the first half of the year. 

 

Imports in June increased by 12.1% year-on-year to 366,099 TEUs (203,555 containers) compared to 326,681 TEUs (181,496 containers) in June 2023.

 

From January to June 2024, total imports reached 2,158,055 TEUs (1,199,783 containers), up 13.7% from 1,897,496 TEUs (1,056,540 containers) recorded in the same period in 2023.

 

Exports in June totaled 112,621 TEUs (60,527 containers), up 10.9% from 101,509 TEUs (54,792 containers) recorded in June 2023.

 

In addition, Exports from January to June 2024 reached 683,522 TEUs (366,746 containers), up 4.9% from the 651,332 TEUs (352,444 containers) reported in the same period in 2023.

 

The port also saw a 17.7% increase in empty container exports, with 228,575 TEUs recorded in June compared to 194,154 TEUs the previous year.

 

Empty container exports totaled 1,356,548 TEUs from January to June 2024, up 14.8% from the 1,181,629 TEUs recorded in 2023. Imports of empty containers increased 26.3% in the same period compared to the previous year.

 

A total of 52,474 containers were shipped by rail in June at the Port of New York and New Jersey. Although down slightly by 1.6% from June 2023, rail volumes in the first half of 2024 were 4.8% higher than the same period last year.

 

In addition, June also saw a strong 10.2% increase in auto imports year-over-year, with 33,953 vehicles passing through the port. Auto volumes from January to June were 10.9% higher than the first half of 2023.
